Bowes is Commonwealth King

The wildest celebrations of the weekend were seen at the York Hall in Bethnal Green where former Jamaican amateur international Philip Bowes was crowned Commonwealth super-lightweight champion.

Bowes won the vacant belt in style, ironing out Tanzania’s Benson Nyilaila with a sweeping back hand in the second round.

The 34 year old southpaw from Leytonstone and his hundreds of supporters erupted in joy and trainer Barry Smith chaired him around the ring in triumph for several minutes, soaking up the applause.

Bowes turned professional way back in 2011 after reaching the last eight of the Commonwealth Games in New Dehli, where he represented Jamaica.

He chalked up two wins there before a quarter-final defeat meant he missed out on a medal.

Bowes qualified for Jamaica through his parents and he says their support has been crucial to his boxing career.

They helped Bowes sell tickets for fights and were beaming with pride after their son was crowned Commonwealth champion at the famous East End fight venue.

The victory was also a triumph for promoter Mickey Helliet.

He took on Bowes after he lost an English-title fight to Glenn Foot in May, 2017 and steered him to four straight wins to set up his crack at the Commonwealth belt.

Helliet said: “Doors will open for Phil now he’s the Commonwealth champion.

“There will be big fights out there for him.”

There’s the possibility of a fight with the winner of the Robbie Davies jr-Joe Hughes clash for the British and European belts that goes ahead in Liverpool next month.
