Philip ‘Quicksilver’ Bowes has a massive fight coming up.
The Leytonstone left hander meets Vusumzi Tyatyeka in an eliminator for the Commonwealth super-lightweight championship on manager Mickey Helliet’s show at the York Hall on Saturday, February 10.
Bowes had been hoping for a shot at the Southern Area belt, but said: “Mickey has found a better route for me.
“This is a really, really big fight for me.
“Nothing and nobody is going to stop me becoming a champion this year.
“I have to get past this guy and that could lead to a big fight for me.”
The Commonwealth title is currently held by Josh Taylor, but the Scottish southpaw seems certain to move on and fight for world honours in the next few months.
Provided Taylor vacates and Bowes wins next month, there’s every chance Bowes will fight for the vacant Commonwealth championship on television.
“I can’t look too far ahead,” stressed Bowes.
“This guy could be another Zolani Tete.”
Tete is the current WBO bantamweight champion from South Africa and around the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
Tyatyeka is also from South Africa, has won 20 of his 25 fights – and can punch.
He has 15 knock outs on his record.
“I’ve had a quick look for him on the internet,” said Bowes, “and I can’t find anything.
“But looking at his record, he’s a class fighter.
“He’s had almost as many knock outs as I’ve had fights and I’m preparing for a tough fight.
“This is a big shot for me and I’m hoping my supporters get behind me.”
Bowes says his narrow and controversial points loss to Glenn Foot for the English title last year was the turning point in his career.
He said: “I'm more aggressive now, I’m more of an all-round fighter.
“I don’t just sit on the back foot and counter – and I throw more punches.
“I made Foot miss all the way through the fight, but when I made him miss, I didn’t counter with combinations – and that’s what I’m doing now.
“I’ve gone away, put things right in the gym and changed my style.”
