Joseph Parker Team Holding Firm For 35% AJ Deal

David Higgins, boss of promotional outfit Duco, who handle WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker, has been making his position in the negotiations between them and Matchroom loud and very clear. The two outfits are trying to agree a unification fight between Duco's Parker and Matchroom's golden boy Anthony Joshua, the IBF, IBO and WBA champion. Eddie Harn's first offer was deemed derisory by Higgins, who then set out on a PR campaign to push for the fight to be made.

The original offer Duco received hasn't been revealed, but they initially were after 40% of the split. This has since dropped to 35% but Higgins is adamant they won't budge again, and he makes the valid point that if Hearn and AJ are serious about wanting to unify, then the belt is worth a premium. Speaking to World Boxing News of the Joshua team's ambition Higgins said,

“if you have Joshua saying he wants a legacy unification fight and he turns down 65 percent of net profit - plus a rematch clause - I think that would be embarrassing. And to then take a voluntary after that.”

The Parker team seem confident their man Parker, who has never been down, has enough to beat Joshua, who they say has a “weak chin”. Regardless of Parker's chances in the fight, their point on the split is salient, if Matchroom and Joshua are serious about getting all the belts, it is not going to come cheap. The whole world knows how much money AJ brings in, and how dangerous a fighter he is, someone like Parker who has worked hard to be in a position to offer a belt, is not going to give it up cheaply.

The talks are ongoing, but reports suggest Matchroom have put a two week window on them to conclude, it will be interesting to see who backs down first, or at all.
