Leyton super-lightweight Philip Bowes takes a huge gamble next month.
Bowes is the mandatory challenger for the Commonwealth belt – but the 34-year-old southpaw won’t get his shot if he’s beaten on promoter Mickey Helliet’s ‘Judgement Day’ show in Bethnal Green on Saturday, October 6.
Bowes is confident there will be no slip ups at the York Hall – and then he wants revenge.
He’s hoping Glenn Foot keeps his Commonwealth title and adds the vacant British belt by beating Robbie Davies jr in Newcastle on Saturday, October 13.
That would give him the chance to avenge one of the three losses on his 20-fight record.
Foot narrowly outpointed Bowes for the vacant English title last year and the South Londoner said; ‘’I definitely want that fight, that would be revenge for me.
‘’That fight taught me a lot. That taught me you have to do whatever it takes to win. If they hit you low, you have to hit them back low.
‘’I learned you have to be nasty in the pros.
‘’But whoever I get to fight, I will take my opportunity with both hands.’’
As an amateur, Bowes reached the last eight of the Commonwealth Games in New Dehli in 2010, but since turning pro the following year, progress has been slow.
He said: ‘’Boxing is hard when you’re starting out.
‘’I had to sell tickets just to fight and if I didn’t sell enough to my family and friends, I had to put my own money in.
‘‘But I was always confident I would get to where I wanted to be in the end.
‘’No matter what your career is, it’s not easy on the way up. It’s not plain sailing for anyone , but I knew that if I kept persevering, I had the ability to get there.
‘’My fan base is bigger now and the fights are bigger and pay better.’’
Tickets for the show are available from 07944 114401.
