Phillips targets a fifth straight win

Gravesend middleweight Sean Phillips says he’s determined to become a champion in 2019.

Phillips targets a fifth straight win at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Saturday, February 2 and says that by the end of the year, he hopes to be in contention for a shot at the Southern Area championship.

The 22 year old says it’s the promise of winning belts that’s driving him on.

He said: “I want to be a champion. That’s why I box.

“As an amateur, I only ever reached regional level, I never won any titles. I want to know what it feels like to be a champion.

“I want to win a title, then move on and win more titles. I know I’ve got time on my side, but I want to get moving this year.

“I’m hoping to have five or six fights this year and then hopefully get a shot at the Southern Area title by the end of the year.

“I had a break from boxing when I was 17 because I fell out of love with the sport, but I came back to it because I don’t want to have any regrets when I’m older.

“I want to do it now.”

Phillips has trained at the Peacock gym in Canning Town since turning pro after winning 15 of 20 amateur bouts.

He says the paid code suits him better.

“I’m a come forward counter puncher with good fitness who likes to break people down,” explained Phillips, “so the longer rounds suit me.”

Phillips reports his home town is backing his bid to win belts.

“I get good support,” he said. “I usually get 150-200 people coming to support me and I do my best to entertain them !”
