Sohail Ahmad returns at the York Hall on promoter Mickey Helliet's big show this month convinced he has the beating of the bill topper.

Helliet has splashed out to secure home advantage for Leytonstone southpaw Philip Bowes as he looks to add the vacant British title to the Commonwealth belt he holds with victory over Akeem Ennis-Brown.

The fight goes ahead on Friday, November 29 and on the undercard, Sohail returns after a year away.

The 31 year old from West Brompton puts his absence down to “shows being cancelled and opponents pulling out” – and says it’s a matter of time before he’s fighting for major titles.

He said: “I want to get a move on now.

“The champions are nothing special. I just need to get myself in position to fight them and then I will prove I’m better than them.

“I sparred Bowes and every time I caught him, he felt it. I can bang and he can’t – and he can’t run from me for 12 rounds. If we fight over 12 rounds, it’s a matter of time before I land on him and he’s gone.

“I’m a boxer – but I can bang as well.”

Ahmad envisages a huge 12 months ahead. “In 12 months’ time I plan to be English champion and looking for other belts,” he said. “I just need to be busy.

“I’ve stayed in the gym all year training with Richard Williams, but it’s been very hard.

“I’ve trained for three fights and they have all fallen through.

“I have kept training and kept learning from Richard, but it has been very hard.

“I have been on the verge of wrapping it up, but I have stayed positive because I know that when I climb up the rankings and get my chance, I will be a champion.”
