The Welsh Invasion

Two sons of Welsh boxing, Lee Selby and Nathan Cleverly, will fight days apart this week as they look to stamp their authority stateside.

Selby will kick off proceedings tonight in Arizona, as he defends his IBF featherweight strap against the durable and highly experienced Fernando Montiel. It will be the first time the man from Barry Island has fought outside of the UK as a professional.

Dubbed the 'Welsh Mayweather' for his boxing skill, Selby has expressed his intention of gaining world-wide recognition. "A win against a well-known fighter like Montiel could change my profile overnight". He added, "I'm fighting on free TV out here, so everybody gets to see me".

His opponent is a former three-weight world champion who has contested twenty title fights over a 19-year-career. So if Selby can win in good fashion, there is no doubt his stock will rise.

Two days later and the spotlight will shift from Selby, to fellow countryman Nathan Cleverly, as he takes on a very capable Andrzej Fonfara for the WBC International light-heavyweight title.

Clev is hoping to return to the top of a division he once ruled at, and besting Fonfara is the first step. It promises to be a tough test for the Caerphilly man, in this, his second appearance at light-heavyweight since dropping down from cruiser seven months ago.

Fonfara is a dangerous operator, as he proved in his last outing when he beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. But in order to set up a showdown with current WBC king Adonis Stevenson, Clev knows that this is a test he must pass.
