Punching plasterer Tommy Williams reckons his boxing IQ can make him a champion.

The Sutton middleweight made a winning return in April after a four-year break and at 30 years old, he’s keen to push his career on.

He has his fourth professional fight on promoter Mickey Helliet’s ‘Judgement Day’ show at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Saturday, October 6 – and says he wants to be fast tracked to the top.

“I had a bit of time off after I got married to concentrate on work,” said Williams, explaining his lengthy absence from the ring.

“I started back training, got an injury and then a show was cancelled.

“I had a few setbacks and I’m happy to be boxing again.

“I need to be pushing on now.

“I’ve been around long enough to be moved on quickly. I want a six rounder by the end of the year, then an eight and after that we can start looking at titles.”

Williams is trained by Greg Stallard and ex-pro Allan Gray and says that with them in his corner, he’s developing a hard-to-beat style.

“I’m settling into a new style,” he said. “I’m a thinker.

“I like to think I’m intelligent and elusive and the jab is my best punch.”

Williams served his amateur apprenticeship with Rose Hill and Fitzroy Lodge ABCs – and says he also owes much to his judo background.

He started competing at four years old and was in the reckoning for Great Britain selection before he made the switch to boxing.

“My dad was a judo instructor,” said Williams, “and I had to do it.

“My drive to train hard and self discipline comes from judo, but I’ve always loved boxing.

Boxing was always my passion.”
