Wait Almost Over For Fonseca Debut

The waiting is nearly over for Southend welterweight Michael Fonseca.

Twice last year his professional debut was cancelled – and now the 25 year old is finally set to launch his career.

He fights at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Mickey Helliet’s Hellraiser Boxing show on Saturday, February 10 and said: “I can’t wait to get started.

“I’ve waited for so long and now I just want to get some fights under my belt and start climbing the rankings as quickly as possible.

“Once I’ve got this first fight out of the way, I will be asking my manager: ‘When’s the next one ?’

“I don’t mind taking fights away from home.

“I know that’s the hard way to do it, but I believe I’m good enough to do that and still come through.

“That might sound like I’m being big headed, but people will see how good I am in time.”

Fonseca hopes to one day show off his skills in his home town.

“My sponsor, Tommy Burling, has talked about getting a show on in Southend,” said Fonseca.

“There are some good gyms here and that could be a good night.”

Fonseca says his day job is helping him stay in shape for next week’s fight.

“I’m a demolition man,” he said. “We knock down walls with sledgehammers and build them.

“I don’t like the sound of ‘The Demolition Man’ for a boxing nickname, though.

“I prefer something like ‘The Lion.’ I want to prove I’m king of the jungle.”

Tickets for the show at the York Hall are available from 07445 663660.
