World Boxing Round Up

A quick round up of goings on in boxing, some thoughts on upcoming and potential fights and a thank you to our writers.

AJ vs Pulev

Matchroom Boxing announced today that Anthony Joshua will defend his IBF, IBO and WBA world heavyweight title belts against Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev in Cardiff on October 28th. The 36 year old Pulev last fought against Kevin Johnson, winning by unanimous decision in April this year. Johnson was destroyed by Joshua two years prior to that inside two rounds.

While there have been complaints about the quality of the match up, Pulev has been a top operator for a while, and following Wladimir Klitschko’s retirement, Luis Ortiz strongly linked with a fight with Deontay wilder, Tyson Fury’s ongoing limbo and Joseph Parker and Hughie Fury finally meeting, there was a paucity of options available for an immediate fight for AJ.

Roman Gonzalez Looks For Revenge

Four weight champion Roman Gonzalez goes into an immediate rematch with the man to take his “0”, Sriskavet Rungvisai,  this Saturday September 9th in California. The Nicaraguan stands at 46-1 (38) and is promising to have, “trained harder than ever before” for the fight. While that may well be the case, the pound for pound competitor Gonzalez looked like he had perhaps moved up a weight too far in their first bout. Whatever the outcome, it should be an entertaining fight.

Golovkin vs Alvarez

It’s almost here! The fight we all wanted, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez takes place next Saturday, 16th September. We will of course be covering it here at Hellraiser, with Mickey writing pages of notes for his breakdown, and a written first look due out tomorrow. Stay tuned, as Mickey is notoriously accurate in his predictions, and he’s leaning towards a shock at the moment!

Cotto vs Brook?

After going out on his shield against Errol Spence, a result which left Sheffield man Brook with yet another eye injury, there are fewer options available to him in a comeback, than if he’d won (for obvious reasons). Fresh off the back of his second to last ever fight, a brutal and dominant win over Yoshihiro Kamegai, Miguel Cotto may well want to go out with a bang. Well, Brook would certainly fit that, particularly if the fight was in the UK. It’s one we’d be keen to see here at Hellraiser.

Hellraiser Writers

If you’ve got a voice, we’ve got a platform!

We’re always looking to add to our stable of writers, recent addition Paul Duckworth had a great debut piece out on the Mayweather versus McGregor fight, and has another on the way this week. He joins regular contributors Chris Waddams of Southpaw Jab, Steve Fearon, Lee Robertson, Conor Slater, our good friends at Assassins Boxing Promotions and many more. All of whom we’d like to thank wholeheartedly. If you’d like to write about boxing, whatever you experience level, please get in touch with athorn@mayfairsportingclub.com.
