World Results Round Up: Cotto, Cameron, Matthews, Theophane

by Adam Thorn

Bethnal Green, London (Friday 1st)

Elliott Matthews captured the English middleweight title at York Hall on this Friday night British Warriors card. Those in attendance for his fight with Grant Dennis saw the two unbeaten men go the full ten rounds before a unanimous decision was given to the 36 year old from Watford, who now stands at 20-0-1 (9). Dennis was gutted to lose and is pushing for a rematch, his first loss leaves him at 10-1 (1).

Leicester, UK (Saturday 2nd)

Chantelle Cameron picked up her first “world” title, in only her fifth fight, stopping the previously never halted Viviane Obenauf of Brazil for the lightly regarded IBO world female lightweight title in Leicester on a Cyclone Promotions card. What was most impressive about Cameron's win was the performance, doing what no opponent before, including Katie Taylor, had managed and battering Obenauf, 12-4 (6), into retirement in the sixth round. Cameron's first year as a professional ends with her record an impressive 5-0 (4) with two titles coming in the last month and a half.

Also on a busy bill in the Midlands on Channel 5, Anthony Yigit, 20-0-1 (7), defended his EBU super lightweight title, unanimously outpointing the dogged Joe Hughes, 15-2-1 (6), over 12 rounds. Luke Watkins, 13-0 (9) halted challenger Mike Stafford, 16-4 (3), in the eighth to defend his Commonwealth cruiserweight title. Jahmaine Smyle, 14-7 (6), has now lost his last three fights after a points reverse against Lennnox Clarke, 16-0-1 (6), for the IBO Continental super middleweight title. In what was another brilliant battle, after his two wars earlier this year with Darryll Williams, Smyle was again on the wrong end of the scores, a unanimous decision going to Clarke 92-97 on all cards.

Berlin, Germany

Ashley Theophane celebrated his half century of fights as a professional in Germany, winning the German super welterweight title in the process. The well travelled Brit stopped Paata Varduashvili in the seventh round, and at 37 years old is carefully planning his exit from a very successful career, now sat at 41-8-1 (12).

New York City, USA

In possibly the shock of the year, four weight world champion Miguel Cotto had his retirement party spoiled by Sadam Ali, 26-1 (14), at Madison Square Gardens. While he will not be happy to leave on a defeat, Cotto, 41-6 (33), was made to look old in places on Saturday by the vibrant Ali, who must be given credit for his performance. Ali now holds the WBO super welterweight title, and will have Liam Smith banging his door down for a shot. Cotto leaves the ring with a heard earned legendary status in an era when the weights he campaigned in were dominated by both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

Hellraiser Boxing wish Miguel Cotto a well earned, happy and fulfilling retirement.
